Attorney General Eric Holder hints that DEA MMJ Raids Not US Policy

On Wednesday, February 25th, Attorney General Eric Holder made an off the cuff but important statement concerning medical marijuana while speaking at a press conference devoted to operations against the Mexican Sinaloa drug cartel.  Obama's Attorney General declared that ending medical marijuana raids is now American policy.

This was in response to a question posed by a reporter who asked, "shortly after the  inauguration there were raids on California medical marijuana dispensaries...do you expect these to continue?"  The reporter noted that the President had promised to end the raids in his campaign.

Holder responded, "What the President said during the campaign...is consistent with what we will be doing here in law enforcement.  He was my boss in the campaign....He is my boss now.  What he said in the campaign is now American policy." You can hear this for yourself in the C-SPAN video, the question appears about 25 minutes into the press conference found on the C-Span video.  If you do not want to listen to the whole press conference video follow this YOUTUBE link to hear the question on the medical marijuana raids and Attorney General Holder's response.

DEA Raids 5 More Medical Cannabis Collectives

ON Febraury 5th California NORML has confirmed reports of 5 DEA raids in LA Feb 3rd. Contrary to rumor, no doctor's office was raided.  The raids were all "smash and grab" operations:  agents took medicine and money, destroyed surveillance cameras and grabbed computers, but did not arrest anyone.

The professionalism of the operations was questionable. In one case, agents reportedly failed to leave a written receipt for cash that was seized.  No rhyme or reason was apparent in the selection of targets, other than they were in the same neighborhood.  Agents gave no reason for the raids other than that marijuana is still illegal, but apparently suggested that they wanted to act fast before receiving new orders.

California NORML believes that recent DEA conduct resembles nothing more than legalized piracy, and calls on supporters to remind President Obama of his pledge to end DEA raids.  See the 2/5/09 news story in the Washington Times "DEA continues pot raids Obama opposes, President vowed to end policy"

Medical Marijuana News

One of the questions often asked is about marijuana and smoking.  Contrary to public perception there is no relationship between smoking marijuana and lung cancer.  This has been established by one of the largest lung cancer studies ever conducted by Donald Tashkin of the University of California at Los Angeles, a pulmonologist who has studied marijuana for 30 years.  You can find the supporting news articles on the Washington Post and WEBMD websites.

One more item of interest is that cannabis (AKA marijuana) can actually help those with asthma.  In technical terms marijuana acts as a bronco-dialator.  I have personal knowledge of this from my own family member who has used smoked marijuana for asthma relief.

Now Georgine DiMaria, 24, former Miss New Jersey,  has stepped in to fight for the legalization of medical marijuana. DiMaria said as a child her asthma was so severe that it left her bedridden, forcing her to be homeschooled.  She has said that using marijuana was medically beneficial to her.  DiMaria has also been an advocate and promoted lung health for six years and was recognized by the American Lung Association for her outstanding efforts.

The Ohio Patient Network suggests that those suffering from asthma who are considering marijuana as an adjunct to the treatment should consider vaporization and inform their doctor.
